5 Common Types of Skin Rashes
Unlike acne, skin rashes can attack people at any age and it can develop on any part of your body including palm, toe, fingers and face as well. Symptoms of skin rashes are red patches or bumps over skin. Inflammation, redness and itching are the common problems with skin rashes.
Many reasons and conditions are there that lead to skin rashes. Allergic reaction to specific food or medicine, skin inflammation, contact dermatitis, skin contact with mites, molds and mildews or virus can lead to skin rashes. One can suffer from rashes due to insect bites as well.
Area of infection and the severity of the rash help skin doctors diagnose the reason. Rashes in a limited area may be a case of localized skin infection or contact dermatitis. Widespread involvement is most of the time led by drug reaction, allergy or viral infection.
Skin rashes are generally not infective; however, rashes due to an infectious virus or disease can be dangerous to others. Rashes are known to be cured on their own; however, it is always recommended to watch all type of skin irritations for few days. Especially itchy skin rashes need close observation.
Here are some common types of skin rashes:
Scabies: A tiny mite, scientifically known as Sarcoptes scabiei, is responsible for Scabies. It develops when a female mite burrows into skin and lays eggs. This leads to red and bumpy rashes around wrists, armpit, between fingers and around waistline. Scabies is very infectious and rapidly spread in public places such as hospitals, schools, prisons etc.
Hives: Itchy and pink or red bumps are the main symptoms of hives. This type of rashes is also known as urticaria or welts. Individual lesions may appear and fade off in minutes. There are two types of hives – acute and chronic. Acute rashes last for less than six weeks, whereas, chronic rashes last for more than six weeks.
Shingles: Varicella-zoster virus is responsible for this painful skin rash. That’s why shingles are also referred as Zoster. Once a person recovers from chicken pox, the virus may not leave the body; they may enter into certain nerve cells and remain dormant for years. Shingles develop when those virus become active again.
Eczema: It is a type of itchy rash; the exact reason of eczema is still unknown. It is a type of skin disorder that makes the epidermis dry. People suffering from eczema become more sensitive to chemicals. It is recommended to visit a skin doctor for eczema treatment.
Drug Allergy: Drug rash or drug reaction can be caused by any medication. The medication that leads to allergic reaction in one may not do any harm in others. It is a skin disorder; itchiness and red blemishes all over the body are the main symptom of drug allergy. Stopping the medication that led to rashes often helps to cure the problem; sometimes doctors suggest additional medicines too.
